Birmingham Children's Hospital, BCH, Excellent hospital. But always running at full capacity, needs more beds. Some training opportunities lost as patients will need to go elsewhere due to lack of beds.Salisbury District Hospital, , An execllent hospital for training with an on-call which is busy without being manic.Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, , Good to work and for patients. Poor access by public transport though esp at nights and weekends.St Thomas' Hospital, Hepatitis C at St Thomas': Clinically OK, but bad infrastructure, St Thomas, appointment system. nursing/consultants OK. receptionists who don't know anything and could not care less.Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, , Unfortunately even a beautiful hospital such as C & W is let down by poor morale. Consultants are extremely unfriendly in a sort of 'us and them' attitude. Do not even greet you with a handshake (do not actually take your hand when you put it out), hardly ever smile. Any requests which are fundamental to working life such as taking annual leave; ensuring good working hours; difficulties on day to day work are met with scorn. They all need a training session in learning the basic principles of learning how to smile and having rapport with other colleagues!The Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Bad experience with Hep C liver biopsy, my liver biopsy (two deep stabs) at Bournemouth hospital, before I began my own alternative therapy treatment, was not at all good. I suffered internal bleeding which caused a great deal of pain, plus damage to my diaphragm which made breathing so difficult I needed periodic gulps of oxygen. My overnight stay turned into a week in hospital to clear a resulting infection which had to be treated with intravenous antibiotics . I think if they had realised I bruised easily in the first place and was at risk of internal bleeding, then another test such as a fibroscan could have been arranged. I was even prepared to go to Bordeaux, France, for this.I feel this option should have been given. At the very least they should have investigated my bodily signs more.North Devon District Hospital, Treatment or Torture at North Devon Hospital, Having lived in the North Devon area for many years, I have visited this hospital on several occasions and undergone various medical procedures. I have always regarded the treatment I have received as first class, and have always been treated with respect and kindness, Therefore I have always held these good caring professional people in high esteem. Unfortunately this point of view became a shattered illusion when last year because of a stomach complaint, I had to undergo some routine medical procedures ………. The first procedure I underwent was a rigid type of sigmoidoscopy (a rigid tube with a lense on the end, inserted into back passage) This was carried out at the out-patients dept. I found this procedure to be extremely painful. Fortunately for me, the doctor realised the pain I was in, and ended the procedure. It was then decided that I would have to undergo a flexible sigmoidoscopy (a flexible tube with a camera attached, and inserted into back passage/bowel ) and because of a cancellation I was booked in for the next day at the Gemini Endoscopy Suite. I checked in to the endoscopy ward as arranged and waited …and waited, what seemed for ages. Eventually I was directed to an office for an interview with the pre-op nurse. To my dismay the nurse then informed me that the procedure would be carried out without sedation. This caused me great concern and anxiety because of the experience I had endured the day before. I informed the nurse about my concerns regarding this. She then assured me that I would have nothing to worry about, because this procedure would be a lot less painful. The pamphlet which is issued by the hospital concerning this procedure, clearly states that if needed sedation would be provided. I was then directed to a cubicle where I was told to take off my clothes and put on a robe, and then had to wait in another waiting room. After another long wait, I was then directed to a pre-op room where the nurse who would be present during the procedure, took my blood pressure and pulse rate etc, and reassured me that there would be some pain, but everything should be ok, she also said that taking deep breaths would help if I was in pain. When I was lying on the operating trolley, just before the start of the op , I mentioned to the consultant about the pain I had endured the previous day. She replied "oh he's been knocking you about then." As the procedure started, I had to put up with very inappropriate comments about my first name. When the consultant started to withdraw the sigmoid scope, (from my back passage/bowel ) it became increasingly painful for me. In an attempt to control the pain I started to take deep breaths. Within a few seconds the consultant (general surgeon ) and the practitioner( O.D.P ) were saying out loud "deep breath push" referring to giving birth. The consultant then said "there is nothing coming out of your vagina" This was followed by loud laughter. At this stage I was feeling dreadful, in excruciating pain that was totally ignored, and being made to be an object of ridicule. The practitioner then said " only a lot of old rope" ( referring to the sigmoidscope tube being withdrawn ) The consultant then said "old bloke " The practitioner then replied " old rope from an old bloke" . I had to endure more disgusting and very degrading verbal abuse before the op had finished. This whole episode was extremely painful and degrading and very traumatic and caused me a lot of stress. I reported the matter to the hospital authorities, and an investigation was carried out. A disciplinary procedure took place, however, because of the regulations I was not allowed to know the type of reprimand that they received. All along I had been requesting a face to face apology from both of them. A meeting was arranged at the hospital. Those present were: Senior Nurse. - Customer Relations Manager - First line Manager - Consultant/ General surgeon - Practitioner (O.D.P ) and myself. The meeting was very disappointing because the consultant was very defensive, and they would only admit to the less serious verbal abuse ( about my name) and totally denied the rest of it. Because of this denial I have decided to submit this review. I genuinely believe that this could happen again (and has probably happened before prior to my experience! ) and because this is a very undignified procedure, most people would probably feel too embarrassed or traumatised to complain. These people must know that this type of medical procedure is stressful at the best of times. It beggars belief that they acted in such an unprofessional uncaring and degrading manner. I have submitted my experience to other review websites as a reminder to what took place and hope that maybe this will prevent any such reoccurrences, although these people have been disciplined by the hospital, because of the N.H.S disciplinary rules, after a limited time, the warning they have received counts for nothing. Glan Clwyd District General Hospital, , I was given No specialist support during a long period of treatment for Hep C. I had to search the internet for my own information which was confusing which in turn caused much anxiety until I found the Hep C Trust who understood my condition, my treatment, my fears and more than anything gave the kind of support I kindda expected from the hospital. Even so , I am loathe to complain as I am so grateful for the successful treatment that has been given me.St Thomas' Hospital, , I did a two year Surgical Rotation at Tommies (pre MMC) and it was probably the best experience I had as an SHO. There is a sense of career progression and support - the odd dodgy manager - but better than most places I've worked. There was good suppoCheltenham General Hospital, , Busy Critical Care Unit with an excellent case mix of elective and emergency admissions. Dynamic consultant team with good learning opportunities. Well supported.
