RE: Tamiflu - How, Why, When, Where, ?

"In order to use the National Pandemic Flu Line Service, patients must know their
NHS number. They will also be asked questions to see if they fall into specified
groups (eg children under 1 year old or patients who are immunosuppressed)
who may need to consult a GP or other health professional. If flu patients have
had their symptoms for less than 48 hours (the maximum time-scale for
effective use of antiviral medicine), they will be given a unique reference
number (URN), which will entitle them to collect antivirals from a local centre
called a ‘collection point’."

"To be agreed. How people will find out their NHS number is currently under discussion at national level."

This is from the Guidelines given to GPs on Pandemic Flu provision - downloadable on the front of their website

or directly here... http://tinyurl.com/dn2wot

So basic advice is... KNOW YOUR NHS NUMBER!

If this does becomes a big problem there is likely to be a big rush on Pandemic Flu Hotline/GP Services (including phones) etc etc, so I guess I'll be trying to locate my old NHS Card today --- I've no idea what my NHS number is.

BTW anyone know where do we find our numbers? What happens to the people who are unregistered? (I haven't been to a GP in 15 years...)

It begs the other question - if it's all going to be handled by the phone will some people try to 'bank' the Tamiflu for future use, and will a black market of the stuff develop...

Not a nice thought, (and not trying to panicmonger) , but not impossible either.

What National Pandemic Flu Line Service?!

See http://www.pulsetoday.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=23&storycode=4122544&c=1

Or news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8022467.stm

It was kind of typical of this government to come out with the bullish "best prepared" argument

In fact isn't that what we were told very recently that we were "best prepared" to handle global economic recession...

Tamiflu - How, Why, When, Where, ?

It seems from doctors' comments that most UK Tamiflu supplies are not held in hospitals - so the question is, in the event of need how is it going to be dispensed?

Apparently there have been various different proposals for distribution - some being call NHS Direct, then delivery, others by a secure central location (e.g. police station)

The chances are that it won't be along traditional lines, i.e. book an appointment at your friendly local GP.

Watch this space...
