Are Masks any use - and any masks in particular?

There's not much clarity on whether masks do much to prevent spread. Some people say they become useless after an hour and a half and give a false sense of security when a lot of spread is hand to mouth. The recommendations on the HPA algorithm are for the FFP3 masks - rather than the bog standard surgical masks you get in theatre (or in episodes of ER depending on your perspective).

Any thoughts on this?

Not sure - they always say that there's no evidence for wearing face masks in theatre , but these guys must be rubbing their (latex-clad) gloves in glee... www.justgloves.co.uk. In fact Roche and Glaxo (and the whole Pharmaceutical industry) must be jumping up and down with excitement.

Tamiflu's on the internet for 150 quid a box - that's a 1000% mark-up...

You sound like doctors - is there any way you can recommend a good type or source of face mask that patients can buy either

1) In the shops (I'm based in UK - London)
2) Failing that on the internet

Thanks -

What's a FFP3 mask?

Behold: Some recent update on whether masks work or not...

Short answer: Either wear it all the time, inside and out, more or less never taking it off, or don't bother.

Abstract
Many countries are stockpiling face masks for use as nonpharmaceutical interventions to reduce viral transmission during an influenza pandemic. We conducted a prospective cluster-randomized trial comparing surgical masks, non–fit-tested P2 masks, and no masks in prevention of influenza-like illness (ILI) in households. During the 2006 and 2007 winter seasons, 286 exposed adults from 143 households who had been exposed to a child with clinical respiratory illness were recruited. Intent-to-treat analysis showed no significant difference in the relative risk of ILI in the mask use groups compared with the control group; however, <50% of those in the mask use groups reported wearing masks most of the time. Adherence to mask use was associated with a significantly reduced risk of ILI-associated infection. We concluded that household use of masks is associated with low adherence and is ineffective in controlling seasonal ILI. If adherence were greater, mask use might reduce transmission during a severe influenza pandemic.

FFP3 Masks vending site? useful?

I've had a look around - these guys seem to stock the FFP3 Masks and aren't too expensive.

(By the way this isn't an advert - and I have no idea if they have any in stock etc - they seem fairly reasonable anyway)

The consensus seems to be that masks do more to help others from catching flu from you (by stopping your sneezes projecting) than to help you catching flu from others - (although it seems as if there is some benefit)

We should all be wearing masks if things turn out to be worse than just a bad flu.
