One of the questions in the nhsUnlocked survey is about being judged by staff in the NHS. NHS workers are more and more conscious of Hep C as a potential risk - but there's not so much being done to balance this with an attempt to reduce stigmatization. Has anyone else experienced problems when they have visited their GP or hospitals?

No stigma with medical staff, some receptionists I have seen have been a bit unpleasant, what do receptionists need to know Med details for anyway?
I am concerned about the lack of safety precautions some Nurses display. On the day of my Biopsy the nurse put a cannula in without gloves, and I've had more than a couple of blood tests done by ungloved nurses. Surprising, given that all are aware of my infection.

I have yet to come across any stigma from any quarter. I tell everyone about HCV that I possibly can.

RE: Judged by the NHS?

I am always very open (mouthy) in fact about my heptitis c, I have found NHS staff - and everyone really to be curious and ask lots of questions. I do like to correct some of the myths.

RE: Judged by the NHS?

I have a far greater concern than simply being on the wrong end of judgemental NHS Staff, my concern is that I have had treatment refused by NHS Staff. Having moved to Scotland I became in need of a Dentist before being accepted onto an NHS Practice. I contacted one in the general area of my home and called them. I told the receptionist that I had Hep C and would like her to go and ask the dental surgeon if they were prepared to see me. After a short while the receptionist came on the phone and said that would be perfectly ok, and asked if I could be at the surgery for 8:30am. I was there along with my son who also needed treatment, which they also agreed to see to, (my son does not have Hep C).
I arrived at the surgery an waited from 8:30am until 11:30am before I was seen. On entering the surgery I immediately received a barrage of verbal abuse and was told that the Dentist was unhappy about dealing with 'My kind of person'. I asked her what she though my kind of person was, and she said 'one that caused a great deal of trouble and additional work' As I needed the dental work I said nothing, neither did the dentist as she made the hurried and temporary repair, however where the dentsit left off the nurse took over, saying that the dentist had just had a baby and it wasn't right that she shopuld be expected to deal with'Somebody' like me. After the treatment I was able to respond and say to both the dentist and the dental nurse/assistant that I had not forced myself upon them, I had declared myself to be Hep C and that they invited me to attend the surgery. The nurse was getting so aggressive that she was close to taking a fit. On leaving the surgery I was asked to pay the £70.00 charge, I informed them that I had absolutely no intention of paying for the abuseive behaviour I had been subjected to. I was told that they would take me to court, and I informed them that this was indeed my hope. As a former Senior Social Worker, a specialist with Disabled, and Welfare Rights Issues, as well as being a Consultant Social Worker in the Voluntary Sector, and advisor to several Legal Practices regarding the above issues I informed the dentist that she would in all probability find herself guilty of discrimination, and abusive conduct, and that she was negligent in practice proceedures as if she new what she ought to know I posed no more threat to her than anyone else. Needless to say she didn't pursue her threat of court action, and withing 3 weeks I was being seen by another NHS dentist who had to undo the 'Poor' quality work the the former had undertaken.
